Vinha da Serra 2013 Red is the expression of a single parcel. A 90 years old small vineyard  located in altitude (600m) in the Serra da Estrela, on a hillside facing west. We find here a wonderful balance with altitude bringing freshness and sun exposure to the west bringing ripeness. The fine tannins in the mouth remind the fine texture of the soil. A "Premier Cru" with identity and sense of harmony.

This vineyard produces very little. In 2013, we managed only a barrel of 225L of this vineyard. In the following years 2014 and 2015 there will be no bottling the wine, for not having achieved amounts to fill a barrel. 2013 therefore offered a unique opportunity for us to taste the fruit of this single vineyard.

A CENTENARIA 2013
Ficha técnica A Centenaria 2013

A centenaria 2013 is the expression of a 120 years old vineyard with great character. We are facing what could be considered as a « Grand Cru ».  We decided to bottle it as a single vineyard in order to preserve its unique and strong identity. Tasting this wine is an experience that leads us to travel back in time to discover the aromas and flavors of the foothills of the Serra da Estrela, in the Dão, as it was in the late nineteenth century.

MOREISH 2013

Luis Lopes, winemaker at Quinta da Pellada, has been helping me to make the wines from the beginning of this adventure. Luis has played a key role in this project. Luis is a great friend and also one of the most talented winemakers of the new Portuguese generation. Open-minded, educated, wise and humble. A person who seeks to make wines as naturally as possible. We share the same philosophy.

After the end of malolactic, Luis tried to make the most thrilling blend with my 2013 red barrels. It resulted in a barrel. Later, each time we tasted that barrel, we thought it would deserve to be bottled separately. It was what we did.

I told to Luis to choose the name of the wine and to design the label, because this would be "his" wine, in order to honor his talent and all the support he has given me since 2010. Luis chose the name « Moreish », a word that perfectly expresses what we feel when we drink this wine.

Techsheet - Vinhas Velhas 2013 (red)

History has taught us that Dão belongs to those places that Man has long-recognised as exceptional for producing great wines. Despite its enormous potential to produce red and white wines, it is a region that continues to stubbornly remain out of the limelight.

António Madeira, who is French of Portuguese descent, has his roots in the foothills of Serra da Estrela. Since 2010, António Madeira has been researching, the places in this sub-region, that our ancestors elected as the best for vine, those that we might call the «Grands Crus of the Dão highlands» and found a series of old vines that are distinctive because of the authenticity of their grape varieties, the characteristics and nuances of their granite soils and sun exposures.

2013 was a year of long and good maturation. Fortunately in our case, it was achieved harvesting all the grapes in the last days before the week of heavy rain that occurred at the end of September.

This red Vinhas Velhas 2013 comes from the blend of several small old vineyards cultivated by Antonio with dedication. It illustrates very well the philosophy of the domain.

VINIFICATION
The vinification philosophy was to respect the grapes and nature and focus on seeking the expression of the terroir of Serra da Estrela, thus, no other product was used except sulphur.
Alcoholic fermentation took place in open vats with traditional treading and began naturally, with the yeast from the vine itself, to express its identity in the purest form.
Very little extraction was sought. After pressing, the wine was placed directly into used French oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation took place until the following spring and where it aged for 18 months.
Bottling took place in December 2015.

TASTING NOTES
This wine expresses the character and elegance of the land that witnessed its birth and takes us on a journey through time to discover the aromas and flavours of Serra da Estrela foothills, just as they were back in the time of our forefathers.
Mineral aromas and flavours of granite and fresh red forest fruits. With vegetal nuances and perfumed by small flowers, pine needles and pine forest. Delicate, pure, tightly knit, full of life, elegant and structured, it is noteworthy because of its fresh and persistent balance.

Complex and deep, wine of great finesse and harmony, where we find the terroir elements of this single vineyard.
Complex aroma, granite, aromatic herbs, resins, fresh fruit and flowers, a set of great finesse. In the mouth we find granite powder, ripe fruit and crystalline, resulting from an optimum balance due to exposure to the west and the altitude freshness. The finesse of the tannins recalls the fine soil texture in this vineyard. Very long and intense mineral finish. It is therefore a tasting in which we feel the soul of the place.

Techsheet - A Palheira 2013 (red wine)

A Palheira is a blend to be released only on the best years, showing the best blend of the year.
Respecting the regional tradition of blended wine, A Palheira 2013 results from the selection of the best barrels of 2013. 4 small old vines, aged between 50 and 90 years old, constribute to this blend. Together, they reach a harmonious whole that shows the best Dão Serra da Estrela has to offer.

Bottling took place in July 2015.

TASTING NOTES
Still very young, full of energy, showing  ability to age in bottle. Great finesse, flowers, crystal fruit, resins and minerals combine in a pure nose, unique and complex. Mouth salivating, dense and elegant, very fresh, full of energy, demanding food around. Long finish and granitic.

Techsheet - Moreish 2013

History has taught us that Dão belongs to those places that Man has long-recognised as exceptional for producing great wines. Despite its enormous potential to produce red and white wines, it is a region that continues to stubbornly remain out of the limelight.

António Madeira, who is French of Portuguese descent, has his roots in the foothills of Serra da Estrela. 2013 was a year of long and good maturation. Fortunately in our case, it was achieved harvesting all the grapes in the last days before the week of heavy rain that occurred at the end of September.

After pressing, the wine made the malolactic in stainless steel and then went into a used french oak barrel in which it aged for 12 months.
Bottling took place in July 2015.

TASTING NOTES
High ability to age, wine focused on its terroir. Open 1 to 2 hours before drinking. Subtle aroma, complex, tough cherry, bush. Elegant and silky mouth, full of energy, fresh and tense. Stimulates buds. Very Moreish !

Aroma subtil, complexo, cereja rija, mato. Boca elegante e sedosa, cheia de energia, fresca e tensa. Estimula a papilas.
